The title “Laird” is quintessentially Scottish, and therefore its ramifications may not be familiar to everyone outside Scotland.
It’s a courtesy title used since the Middle Ages, passed down through generations to designate to a person (male or female) who owns an amount of land in Scotland. In centuries past this would often be a person who was Chief of one of the Highland clans.
A Laird has no official noble or aristocratic status. It’s not a title conferred by any authority, but rather one used in a feudal sense by the tenants of the landowner’s estate.
In Scotland a Laird is a much honoured historic title and valued throughout the ages by Scottish Clans.
